Pets May Be at Risk Because Of this Caterpillar

At the end of winter, we are still talking about the same problems with caterpillars and pets and animals. Indeed, these worms are real dangers for animals. For this reason, security measures should be taken so that they do not approach them.

Processionary caterpillars are worms that move in groups. They usually appear in the spring. Dogs like cats may be tempted to get close to them or swallow them, which can be detrimental to their health. In fact, these caterpillars contain poison in their bodies which can cause indigestion and necrosis in animals. In this situation, they should be promptly taken to the veterinarian.

After contact with a caterpillar, the cat or dog begins to drool and refuses to eat because of the pain caused by the toxins.

The most common symptoms are:

  • Vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Inflammations
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Excessive salivation

As soon as you notice these symptoms, do not hesitate to go to the veterinarian for a quick care.

The treatment to be administered to the dog will depend on the severity of the case. The veterinarian can resort to the use of antibiotics, antihistamines, anti-inflammatory, gastric bandage or at worst surgery.

You should be vigilant and ensure that they do not have a home. In some cities, the town halls take care of their elimination, but if not in your area, you will be obliged to do it yourself. It is therefore advisable to protect yourself with a mask and gloves, as contact with these worms is also dangerous for humans.
